Simplify your communications: Start with just two things

Let’s be honest, often fundraising can feel overwhelming.
There are so many tools, plans, and platforms to consider. But what if I told you that you don’t have to figure it all out at once? What if starting well is a lot simpler than we often make it?
At its heart, fundraising for a Christian ministry is not just about asking for money. It’s about inviting others to join in what God is doing, to become part of something meaningful, something that changes lives.
And to do that well, especially in ministry or a church setting, you don’t need to have everything in place. You just need two things to begin: a clear fundraising goal and a good understanding of your audience.
These two things, your “what” and your “who,” are enough to give shape and direction to your efforts.
Why your fundraising goal matters
Your goal is like your North Star. It keeps you focused and helps you know when you’ve arrived. Without a clear goal, it’s easy to drift—pouring time and energy into activities that don’t lead anywhere.
Think of your goal as the answer to this question: What are you trusting God to accomplish through this fundraising effort?
Some common goals might be:
- Raising money to meet a specific need
- Finding new people who will support your mission
- Building awareness around a cause
- Encouraging people to become monthly donors
Clarity here helps you make better decisions about what to say, where to say it, and how to invite people to respond.
Why your audience matters
Just as important as knowing what you’re aiming for is knowing who you’re talking to.
Different audiences respond to different messages. A long-time supporter may need encouragement. A first-time donor may need clarity. A church partner may need a deeper connection to your mission.
Ask yourself:
- Who are we inviting to be part of this work?
- What do they care about? What moves their hearts? What language do they understand?
When you truly understand your audience, your message becomes more relevant, more personal—and more powerful. You’re no longer shouting into the void. You’re having a conversation with someone who matters.
It doesn’t have to be complicated
Many ministries don’t have full fundraising plans or polished strategies. And that’s okay. Start with what you can do. Even without a big budget or a comms team, you can take a step forward by doing these two things: Write down one clear goal. Describe one specific audience you want to reach.
These things can shape your messaging, guide your decisions, and move your mission forward.
Follow Jesus’ example
When Jesus fed the five thousand, He didn’t start with a detailed strategy. He started with five loaves and two fish and a heart full of compassion (John 6:1–13).
In the same way, you might not have much, but if you bring what you do have to the Lord and steward it faithfully, He can multiply it for His glory.
So don’t wait until everything’s perfect. Start with what’s essential.
Questions to reflect on
- What is the one thing I want to accomplish through my next fundraising effort?
- Who exactly am I trying to reach and what do they care about?
- Am I trusting God with the little I have, or waiting until I feel “ready enough”?
- How can I simplify my plans so I can focus on what matters most?
